But Childhood Thou Wert

I knew not what thou really wert, Until from me thou did part. Tho' innocence was what thou meant, But poor me—that, I hastily spent! And now in these days of my youth, I have come to know the truth: That childhood thou simply wert, All those years I had thee in my heart.
