Burn

You threw my heart into the fire and watched it burn The flames had taken hold inside my chest The heat from love lost stung like embers on my skin Smoke seeped slowly into my lungs stoking the coals in my belly I choked on pathetic pleas for help Tears fell but it was not enough to douse the blaze Pitiful sounds escaped my smoldering lips Still you spat chemical words You laughed as you added fuel to the inferno I cracked and crumbled at your feet But the phoenix rises from ashes And I, too, will be whole again
