Buddha, Desire and Possessions

Buddha was a prince before he reached enlightenment. He gave up worldly desires and possessions. What does one now a days have to give up, when all our motives are driven by desire and everything we own possesses us. Is enlightenment itself a desire, and we just happen to stubble upon it when all the schism of life fall apart and reform
