Notes About The Poem
Nicola Byrne's You Broke My Heart contest
Broken Hearts
are broken hearts hard to find?
they’ve littered the streets,
since the beginning of time!
it is the unspoken war, the one we avoid.
we speak of a splinter of glass
one here…one there
but yolks are smashed –
can’t you see the spreading mustard gas?
how pretty paper hearts look together…
but watch the tearing in two
the crushing
the shredding
the screaming
i’m out of breath to think of such things…
cupid’s arrows hurt! they pierce, they twist, they bleed!
some folks are just an offering –
arrows all over her – in her crown, shoulder, stomach, side –
she’s terrified, closed up inside, too many stitches.
her mouth no longer says- i love you…
painted on lips quiver and shake, at everyone within her wake.
wake up, move on, he’s not worth your time!
she’s cold inside, like icy titanic waters. but -
she didn’t drown. she barely clings to the lifeboat
along with every other tear in the ocean deep.
