Broken
Disappointment furrowed her thin blond brows
It seemed a lifetime ago that
They’d declared their love with marriage vows
She’d forgive rather than combat
This man, who after twenty years strong
Was struggling with demons and drink
It was hard for her to get along
His raging left her on the brink
Of both frustration and bleak despair
The names he called her were like blows
He threw them at her without care
But tonight he had punched her nose
And perhaps that’s what it took at last
To help her make that fateful call
The police came to help her so fast
Pushing him up against the wall
The handcuffs went on and then they went
To the station where they’d keep him
She knew that his mind was warped and bent
It was the drink and not some whim
But the pain was there, inside and out
She had reached her breaking point now
She would not let herself cry and shout
Time to move on she did avow
Six months later it had all worked well
Her fears were now finally quelled
When she moved out she was scared as hell
Against his abuse she rebelled
Being independent was a big change
Sleeping alone was the hardest
Her emotions travelled a far range
Knowing it was all for the best
