Breaking Through

I have become removed
from the pulse of ordinary things.
The daily walk is no longer
calibrated by what I take in
but by the number of steps
measured by a pedometer
handcuffed to my arm.
Much of the world
goes unnoticed - pushed aside
to the periphery, too small
or distant to register interest
on the blunt sweep
of my senses.

Mostly, the world just passes
in a blur diminished by the glare
from thoughts played out
on the mind's internal screen.
Nothing seems anchored
but drifts inexorably towards
a distant point miraged
on the horizon of some
indeterminable fear.

And yet,
there are moments when
the world breaks through.
Yesterday, the soft, morning
light of the April sun glowed
on the outstretched wings
of a cormorant. It seemed
to hold itself in a posture
of prayer. I am redeemed
by seeing the wonder
in such ordinary things
and connect
to something deeper
where all of creation
has its origins,
made whole again.

Those cormorants seem to show up when least expected, I see them from time to time when walking the dog along the canal nearby, and I agree they do have that ability to snap us back into reality, a superb piece of poetry Paul, especially that second stanza, Mr Heaney would’ve loved this one for sure, cheers David

Hi David. I live on the coast and cormorants are my constant companions....symbolise the natural world in light filled glory. Thankyou my friend for yr kind words. Your mention of Heaney a gift...he and Mahon are the shining lights in my poetic universe. The Irish Poets speak to me like no other...probably an echo from my heritage...good number of the early settlers and convicts shipped here were Irish...in our aussie DNA. Cheers, Paul

I can relate to your experiences as you walk. Yes, the wonder in ordinary things! Faving.

Thankyou Sara for yr comments. The distractions are more compelling these days in terms of disconnecting us from the joy of being fully alive in the moment. The natural world offers not a means of escape from the self, but a doorway into self fulfilment, a unification with our roots. I do go on don't I...sorry. Take care Sara. Paul

Hello Paul, the way you describe drifting through the days feels painfully familiar, with the world shrinking to a blur until something small insists on being seen. I believe tech has robbed us of the everyday beauty of the earth. I love getting out and walking without any tech. Blessings, Daniel

Hi Daniel. I guess the poem is a commentary on the way so much of our modern lifestyle removes us from engaging with a more meaningful reality, makes us less able to be fully aware and alive in the moment. Poetry of course is an excellent medication. I thank you sincerely for reading and giving yr thoughts on the poem my friend. Cheers, Paul

Wonderful to read it still breaks through Paul - I frequently have those shock wake ups where everything is beautiful and I can't believe it's just occurred to me. Keeping up the positive routine of the daily walk is all that can be done in the intervening time. We have to put ourselves in beauty's path (although sometimes I have the best cup of tea ever, or salt on a tomato feels life changing - so beauty and wonder are always lurking too - battling for top spot). Great to read your talent

Wise comments LG....connection is everywhere. It is a matter of becoming aware, shift the focus to being fully in the moment. Modern technology unfortunately provides an excess of ways to escape into an artificially created world. Thankyou for you kind words and wisdom my dear friend. Take care, Paul
