Breakfast Buddies
I sat on the grey wooden bench, that sunny morning; studying for a test.
A grey squirrel leapt up next to me, as if to say…”hello”.
He eyed my biscuit and I pinched off a piece; laying it next to him.
He stuffed it into puffy cheeks and with a twitch of his nose, stepped closer; bushy tail perked up, behind him.
I passed him another pinch or two and after his dining experience, scrambled away.
I enjoyed my last bite, watching him ascend a fir tree.
With two weeks left in the spring semester; I returned to the park every morning and crammed for exams.
Each time, he appeared on my bench and we shared breakfast;
He stayed longer, each time.
When the semester ended, I knew my furry friend would miss me, as much as, I would miss him.
As fall leaves played with the light and color,
I made my way to campus, and my favorite garden bench with my biscuit and coffee.
I crossed the street and noticed, Mr. Squirrel;
There he sat on the garden bench, waiting for me.
I wasn’t sure that I’d see him, but this time,
I bought an extra biscuit and we both ate, heartily.
