I had a wonderful Hemingway professor at university, she was an ex nun; but unfortunately I took her class as a five week summer course, and so her and I were never really able to get into it. But I agree with you Lin, if I'm understanding: It's better to boast the scars of a battle than to have lost the war. I don't know what soup mail is and so didn't get it, but thank you for the thought.

I didn't know who should've gotten the lion's share of my sympathy in that book. He won his battle and had the bones to prove it, but... Thanks, Jeff. btw... I sent you soup mail yesterday.

Thank you, Andrea. In a college course I had to write an alternate ending. As if Hemingway's could be improved!

Good morning and thank you, Mike. Some battles should never be started, considering what’s to gain or lose.

Ain’t that the truth Lin, especially in this case but at least it was a great book and story, and you’ve certainly captured the essence here, excellently penned, cheers David

I’m more ambivalent about the whole situation he got himself into, could he really have beaten off all them sharks, probably not but like your Monoku says, there are definitely life lessons to be learnt!

Thanks, David. I enjoy reading a book before seeing the movie. For some reason, both of them stuck with me all these years. I recall being more angry with Santiago than sympathetic.
