Blue Jay

Ah, when the window feeder is set in place
Crested male blue jay hastens to call and feed,
So bossy, chattering, giving smaller birds no space
Such unnecessary ruckus over bits of suet and seed
Blue jay, the bully, seems to have an inner complex need.

I came to that "bully" conclusion about bluejays long ago. We have plenty of them in all seasons in New England. I've seen them scare squirrels off bird feeders! They truly are the hogs of birddom. Because of them bird feeder makers have had to construct feeders they can't enter or feed from. / Maurice

And, in a way, that's a shame. They are only birds, and they do what they do instinctively. I suppose they are overly-territorial. Anyway, I wish they wouldn't be so greedy and could develop a bit of empathy for the smaller birds. Thanks, Maurice, for the read and the valuable observation.

Nice poem about those pesky little birds who used to poke at the strawberries growing in my late mother's garden.

Beautiful birds, but a real pain.

You've analyzed the blue jay perfectly there, methinks. I don't think therapy would do him much good, however. lol.

True, Gershon. I just don't like bullies--human or animal kingdom, period. Glad you got a laugh out of my poem.

Hi L Milton! This poem fits blue jays to the letter! It's funny, and anyone who has observed these bird hooligans will think so too.

Thanks, Jennifer. I think they probably will. I've watched them a lot through my kitchen window. They are some operators!

The blue jay does embody assertive - if not aggressive - beauty, but I've seen jays get bullied by shiny black grackles and I always find myself cheering for the jays! :) A wonderful poem, L MILTON, with a great last line! Warmest wishes.. ~Susan

Thanks so much, Susan. They do make me so mad when they chase the little finches and titmice away. I appreciated your kind comment.
