Blue

Last night, I dreamt of you
Like a rhapsody in blue
Not even Gershwin could compose
The way your presence lingered
Over me
Long after I awoke
My dream was brief and faded, quite
Like an oldies movie would be
But you and I were tinted blue; just
Like the rhapsody

We were in your office, with no clue
How we wound up there
I see the zebra-patterned rug, your
CD rack against the wall
I am sitting on your cozy couch when
You draw suddenly near
I know you well enough to sense the
Music in the background
Though it isn't there for me to hear
And no one's there to see
It when you grace me with your company
Lean in, and plant one on me

Your kiss is something beautiful that
I've felt not once before
Your lips were strong and masculine
And you held me like a man
And when we broke apart, I couldn't
Help but ask, "But why?"
Then you replied: there was no other
Way to bring your love to life

Then I woke up all alone in the
Dark, with nothing but my
Empty sheets to console my lonely heart
When you refused to leave my mind,
I began to write, because not much can bring
Me clarity, and poetry is
Sublime
I'm sorry if I bring you shame by claiming this little
Piece of you as mine
I hold it dearly in a mason jar, let it sparkle like
A firefly

I light it up like a candle and expose
Its brilliant flame
Burning blue, the fire warms the room
And I don't miss you quite as
Much
With the taste of your dream-self still
Dancing on my lips
I realize I am safe and sound, not quite
Haunted by the thought of you
Your fake love keeps me almost satisfied
Colors me blue until the morning
