For years this name was thought to referr to the earthworms that appear as the soil warms in spring, inviting birds to feed. Captain Jonathan Carver visited the Naudowessie (Dakota) and other Native American tribes in the 1760s and wrote that the name Worm Moon refers to beetle larvae that emerge from winter hideouts at this time.
