Blackbird, blackbird, where have you gone? Here the limbs you lately danced upon, In sunset orange, in sunset red, Now the grapevine says, "Blackbird is dead." Disbelieving owl cries, "Who? Who?" Disheartened rooster won't cock-a-doodle-doo. Nanette laid flowers on the grave. He took but little, but much he gave. Cardinal restless amid the greenery, And oblivious to the usual scenery! All the smiles have turned to cries; Adam hangs his head and sighs. Blackbird is dead. What happens now? What now will the fates allow? Will dawn now sing of this new day? Or have Sunday's singers all gone away? Blackbird is dead and time is creeping. Blackbird is dead-the world is weeping. All the worst is come to pass; Moonlight spilling on the grass.

Evelyn, I enjoyed reading your work. I wonder if it has a deeper meaning that only some people would know what is being said? Thanks for the visit to my page. Sara

You're so very welcome, Sara. It was a pleasure. I'm glad you enjoyed my work. As to a deeper meaning, most of my poems are open to different interpretations, and many lines have dual meanings. Like abstract art, different people can look at it and see different things, depending on their personal perspective. If a person is grieving, the poem could be about death in general. If your beloved pet bird has died, it could, indeed, be a poem about a blackbird that has died, and etc. Thanks for your lovely comment.

You brought the scene to life, displaying the impact the blackbird's death has upon his surroundings. I love the last line.

Your talented, image-laden pen has made this sad event come alive for me, Evelyn. The forest and the garden will recover, but thanks to you, the loss is felt. Remarkable write! Happiness and Joy, Gershon
