ha! i remember teaching "the good earth" to my class of 8th graders and they all cracked up when the main character went out to the fields with his hoe. it took a long time to settle them down...

I had a similar experience in a Chicago school once upon a time with 6th graders who were all yelling "There's a hoe in this book!" They were pounding the table and could not stop laughing.
