Biblical Meaning

my habit now
is to circle my belly with my arm
to hold it up
until her time to come
is upon us
I gaze into space
dreaming
gestating
about the day she was conceived
in the high weeds
your body a heavy shadow over mine
about the day she will soon be born
I long to feel that empowering pain of womanhood
and hold my husbands
hands
as we bring this child through birth together
no more intimate act
is possible
impatient for those hours together
I wait in the heat
knowing the biblical meaning of childbirth
