Beyond the Carousel
She is dressed in variegated ribbons, jewels and tassels,
Like a show horse ready to compete,
Yet is frozen in time, anchored to a carousel.
Her mane is plastered to her neck like flames licking at her throat,
Head thrown back with ears pinned and nostrils flared,
Mouth open in a silent scream.
Her eyes are wide,
revealing slivers of white around the irises
Which are fixated on something in her peripheral vision,
Just beyond the carousel.
She is stuck,
Eyes forever locked on whatever she is so terrified of,
With no possibility of escape.
