How quickly I got drunk on him
He was the salt I licked off the rim
    of glass after unsatiable glass
Intoxicated on love, over the brim
I drank beyond limit, beyond control
until inebriation took an ugly toll

Then the drinks became too bitter
like sparkling champagne loses its glitter
In sober state I admitted my mistake -
    drunkenness is a hard hitter
I taste salt from tears upon my tongue
because of a song I should've left unsung

Limits are signs of our morality. Why Augustine said”Love me and do what you want”. I suppose: because Love means responsibility, but a subtle observer like Shakespeare thinks:” too child is love to ask it mind.” Nevertheless the inner song deserves be sung and shared: in happy cases.

I never sip from the cup of love anymore, Charlie. It's proven to be too painful. Thanks, dear friend.

The metaphor is a strong one, in many ways. but the end is invariably painful. Great poem, Lin.

I guess the same after effects would be felt if we're talking literally about alcohol or love...both strong addictions. Thanks a lot, Tim.

Fabulous allegory being drunk on love and your poem made me think of the song title 'addicted to love' ... and it can be as addictive as any substance and as hard a habit to kick:-( hugs jan xx

It must be hard to kick for so many to have given up so much because of it. I feel like I lost all I needed in life because 'he' wanted to dwell in a potato patch. Thank you, dear one.
