Bells

Bells

Solitary heart, newborn in brooding silence,
Steps on a cluttered path
Through elms and boughs of broken limbs,
In a pungent, evergreen hush
Absent of astral cacophony
That falls like mute pennies from wishes,
No buzz nor whirling wings
Disturbs the tacit spell
Until a faint and far-off chime
Brushes against my startled heart
Like the flutter of a butterfly kiss
For at my feet coral bells harmonize
With snowdrops in strings of chimes
Awakened by the breath of angel wings -
Music born of stardust carried on wind chimes
Banishes black spells in lyrical pinwheels,
Melodic whirligigs ringing in silvery silk jingles
Like crystal icicles brushed by soft winds -
A carillon of the winter angelus
Pealing in effervescent tiptoes to remain.

Your poem is magical my dearest poet friend Sam! Ringing and silent bells always have music on it, sometimes sad but mostly beautiful. Congratulations on your win and this stellar write! Thanks for sharing. Sorry for the late visit and greetings coz I got sick then followed an exam at school. God bless you always and your writings. Thank you so much, Andrea! I loved this theme that made me aware of the role bells, chimes, carillons, doorbells, church bells and even coral bells play in our lives - their joy, their warnings and even their sadness. Sending you joy! Merry Christmas!!

Sam, this is a beautifully penned verse, I can't highlight a line because I would have to quote the whole poem! Excellent entry, congratulations.

Hi Terry! I am so grateful for your lovely note of congratulations and your feedback! I am so glad you enjoyed the lines of this poem. It was fun to write. I thought it was a wonderful theme and made me realize how bells are such an integral part of our lines - even the bells that make no sound like the bluebells, coral bells and snowdrops! Thank you! Merry Christmas!

Sam, fantastic imagery, dreamlike and a bit sad. I felt like it might have been speaking out about abortion with the first line and the broken limbs, butterfly kisses, angel wings… so could be a metaphor. Congratulations on your 5th place placement! ~ Kim

Thank you so much Kim! This was a wonderful contest theme. It made me think of the ways bells influence each day - both the ones that chime and the silent bells of flowers! Thank you for the honor of a win. There were so many wonderful entries! May blessings chime like Christmas bells for you. Merry Christmas!

An excellent take on the contest, this is so clever and you used metaphors so well here.. I dont know which verse to mentions as they all flow together so well... you did this theme so differently to everyone else.. Best of luck in the contest.

Thank you so much, Tom! Had a hard time deciding which way to go until I thought about coral bell flowers. I love the sound of wind chimes like a call into a peaceful place. Have a wonderful weekend as you continue to heal. Over Fork Over. Blessings!

The sound of windchimes, only bells i can never get tired of . I absolutely love the way you’ve written this dear sweet sam, you have a way with words and this poem flows too seamlessly: i especially love the lines “ Absent of astral cacophony “ “ Like the flutter of a butterfly kiss” “ With snowdrops in strings of chimes Awakened by the breath of angel wings -” magical and meaningful metaphors and imagery so descriptively poetic, absolute pleasure reading this today. Sending you light always
