Belinda's First Poem
*My little sister, Belinda, wrote this for me today and I wanted to share it. She'd never written any sort of poetry before and I was impressed. I was also nearly moved to tears (but I'm tough so maintained composure). Often times Belinda is the victim of my sonnet rough-drafts - I'm glad none of my bad writing habits seem to have infiltrated her beautiful poetic voice. Belinda's a wonderful aunt to both of my daughters...my fight for access to the younger of the two, Ava, is what this is written about*
I know what it’s like
this weight on your chest
the pain and struggle
never to rest
Love makes it harder
it multiplies sorrow
emotions are raw
and the distance seems farther
The battle rages
the wounds fill with salt
diligence is the only way
to put war to a halt
Remember the reason
you’re fighting this fight
her smile, her laugh,
her constant delight
Find strength you don’t have
hold fast to her embrace
don’t cost yourself time
from seeing her face
Make up your mind
do what you must
soon it will settle
this battlefield dust
Be smarter than the enemy
don’t give her bullets
she’ll take you prisoner
no keys, and you know this
Rely on love to push you through
not as a crutch for decisions that destroy
do what’s right
and you’ll win
You’ll bring back your joy.
