Believe Them
Listen to poem:
"When people treat you like they don't care, believe them."
time is the most valuable commodity
at the end of the day
there’s never much to spare
every second counting
the time it takes
for a smile or kind word
says it all
many people are convinced
space is limited in their heart
they forget that love is a muscle
that lives in fear of atrophy
you have to be brave to rip off
your rose-colored glasses
even though it will leave your heart
vulnerable and at risk
truth is bound to hurt
it usually does
it’s not fun
one day to realize
people live by
their golden rule
of “what’s in it for me”
it’s an earthshattering moment
of lost innocence
people are wrapped up
in their own little universe
caught up in the cyclone
of their madness
the folks in your inner circle
are the ones who
won’t hesitate to strike
in a miserly way
smiles and kind words
dispensed sparingly
there’s always someone
who is going to want to bully you
by withholding their kindness
they won’t smile
or say a kind word
it’s their way of
manipulating you
to varying degrees
they enjoy seeing you squirm
it’s a game for them
maybe more
subconscious than deliberate
but really
how much of a difference
does that really make
there are people
who will never respect you
that’s the way they’re built
their hearts cold and
without empathy
you can’t count on
outside validation
it’s always fickle
forever unreliable
these are people
close-minded
with undeveloped
hearts incapable of love
in the grandest of ways
it’s sad but true
"When people treat you like they don't care, believe them."
