Behind the Fence Between Us
An old photograph
From a box full of family memories
Told a timeless vision of how I came to be
A giving heart in the demise of the lives
Of migrant children that waited for me
Behind a fence between us
The raggedy dirt stained clothes
The thin smiles of continual hardship
The matted hair, smudged faces and sullen eyes
The eagerness of them to have what I was given
As I stood on the inside locked-in looking out
Behind a fence between us
I could not help my hearts embrace
To think that they had less than me
So I gathered joy-filled candy and food to share
Just to see their smiles come through their sadness
And handed my treasure out lovingly at age three
Behind a fence between us
