Beauty
Beauty
I could map you against your shadows and measure echoes slowly fading into nothing,
I could verify the allotted expectations and paint you in deliberate and colorless tones,
but instead I chose to remain unwavering in the conviction that you belong to this place and this time,
that your presence needs no proof, no map, no justification offered to the world outside.
does it matter who your witness is, are you undone if I erase myself from the equation,
when without doubt and without effort my eyes find you and recognize you completely,
I see you not as a shadow on a wall but as the light that makes the wall exist at all,
and perhaps that is all that ever mattered, to be seen once fully and without condition.
I could fix my eyes forever on our fragile and trembling coexistence in this fleeting world,
I could feel that dull ache for canvas, for paint, for words strong enough to preserve what is,
I could chase immortality in all its forms forgetting completely how brief a forever can feel,
a witness for a moment, but with meaning, but with weight, but with all that cannot be explained.
I could call out louder, call out to the rows of trees lining the quiet path without a name,
tell them how I see each and every one, how they catch the light and send it back transformed,
how they gather pieces of solitude that would otherwise swallow us whole without a trace,
how they stand there unshaken for years and refuse to become backdrop for the world's careless eyes.
I can do nothing against this ache that lives inside me like a second soul I never chose,
I cannot tame that longing for beauty that wakes me in the night and leaves me wordless,
but I can see your beauty and let myself be absorbed by it without asking it to explain,
I can remain a quiet witness to the light you radiate without ever knowing that you do.
and perhaps this is the purest gesture one person can ever offer to another in this life,
not to possess, not to preserve, not to turn into verse what was never meant to be a verse,
but to stand before your beauty with open eyes and a heart completely disarmed by it,
to be absorbed, to disappear into it, and to consider that the most beautiful way to exist.
