Beat the Odds

We beat the odds I remember growing up Going to school Still clueless on what I wanted to do Going from class to class Learning They didn't just give you a grade It was worth earning You learned to appreciate The teachers had a lot on their plate Teaching those who didn't want to be taught Not letting negatives thoughts Stop you all from believing You didn't give up (on us) Instead focused on achieving You have worked hard We beat the odds We beat the odds The odds we did beat We didn't let negativity defeat (Repeat 1x) Let me take you back baby When our grandparents were introduced to slavery Had to work hard From sunrise to sunset Taking care of families Still experiencing neglect Treated with No respect , Doing all this for a little check Raised some of the great Come on who can relate Working day in and out to put something on your plate They would starve to make sure you ate The work hard So you can work harder Instilled in you You are not dumb always smarter It hurts to read or hear history They went through it , they never gave up Did whatever it took We beat the odds The odds we did beat We didn't let negativity defeat (Repeat 1x) Bridge We beat it We made it Society couldn't take it (Repeat 1x) We beat the odds The odds we did beat We didn't let negativity defeat (Repeat 1x) (Repeat until chorus fades) Written by: Concetta Hardnett 09/11/2021
