Beach Respite

Put your beach chair down
On the soft sand near the jetty,
Slip off your sandals and
The towel wrapped around your waist,
Lie back and close your eyes.
Relax. Let your mind empty.

Listen to the waves
Splashing onto the shore
And burbling back through the rocks.
Let the late afternoon sun
Turn your bones to butter and
Release the tensions of the day.

No cell phone, no books,
No wrestling with worries.
After a while, take a swim
In the cold, sweet, salty ocean.
Open your eyes underwater,
And see the patterns in the sand.

Watch a red crab scuttle by.
Pluck some mussels for dinner
Out of the rocks, store them
Wet in your beach bag
So they won’t get too hot.
Time for a nap in the beach chair

While you dry off a bit.
When the air starts to cool,
Wipe the sand from your feet,
And put on your sandals.
Leave the beach, happy, relaxed
And ready for dinner.
