Battle Scars

Don’t judge that kid with her arms all scarred Don’t brand that kid as bad You never would have survived If you had the life she had So say a prayer and show you care She’s paid more than her share of dues Don’t put her down or say bad things Until you’ve walked that mile in her shoes Those who suffered in war earn respect They are greeted like super stars She came from a war you wouldn’t understand On her arms, the battle scars Her own home was the battle zone The desperation, feeling all alone A situation she felt no escape from Then late at night the urges come Innocence lost like a bad dream No self respect, no self esteem It is an ongoing battle to feel whole You can see the beauty within her soul Sometimes I pray for a Judgement day You have no heart if you look away Flashbacks come and the anger stirs The guilt she carries isn’t hers There is a need for justice long past due A need for acceptance from me and you With anger, despair and fear demanding The child needs some understanding In spite of all the tears she cried There are still battle scars deep inside

Heavy, but that's what truth speaks, that is why so many turn to drugs and other escapes. Lord bless these little children and keep them safe and free from harm and bless Vince for championing such a worthy cause. Blessings, Ron

I need to echo Carrie's sentiments, as I hold great respect for you and the work you do with abused children. This poem says so much, and it just hurts my heart to know and understand the horrors these children have suffered. A powerful, loving, giving write from the compassionate heart of a talented writer. Wish there were more people like you. Love, Shar

Compassion and understanding,...this poem says it well. I have noted from your comments on other poetry, Vince, that you have made a commitment to these troubled kids, and I honor and respect your dedication. They are fortunate to have you their friend, their advocate and for enlightening the rest of us....as a former teacher of little ones from troubled homes, I felt a longing to wrap them all up and bring them home with me so often. We need to do everything we can to help. God Bless...Carrie

Vince this screamed inside when I read it. This is the population I work with and sometimes they are so difficult and I have to remember to take a step back and see the scars. Wonderful eyes wide open writing. Id like to make a copy for my office if its okay. Laurie
