Awakenings

Broken hours constituted crippled days,
I was content to let them limp and hobble
Their weary, skewed progression,
Carried them on my back like fading soldiers
In and out of no man's land.

Through wire coiled, wormed with barbs,
I remained uncaring of the empty passage;
The knee scuffed clamber
Issued bloody abandon from numbing joints,
Left a trail dissolve of scarlet rice.

Studied roads behind, tar-mac ghosts,
I felt white line fever burn regressive,
Lost and blurred my portal
Leading backwards to forgotten love
No more or less estranged.

This sleep has claimed forever,
I wept and swept it in my arms,
The hollow of promised awakenings
Bestowed no light or eureka solace,
And I can never turn back the tide.
