Autumnal
AUTUMNAL
A timely reminder is September’s first chill
After the harvest it’s brown ploughed fields
Kids walking to school as they all start again
A new set of friends, and some with a brain
It is both sad and serene as summer yields
And gold and red leaves fall, silent and still
No longer summer’s hot and sunny hours
Now, days are in a mild temperate mood
An ideal situation to prepare for the cold
Trees nearly bare, both the young and old
Squirrels hiding nuts as next Spring’s food
Among the last blooms of resilient flowers
