Autumn Song

(from the French of Paul Verlaine)

Sobs long and thin
of violins
hurt my heart
as the weary part
begins.

I cannot breathe
emotions seethe.
When silver chimes
waft other times,
I grieve.

Borne through the trees
on an evil breeze,
I ride the air
now here, now there.

Dead leaves.
