Autograph
A moment that will pass too soon
So much I want to say
that can never be uttered
in those few seconds
Wishing we could skip this nonsense
the hours waiting in a long line
snaking out the door
and down the hallway
sacrificing half a week’s pay
That we could meet
as most people do
Simply as souls
curious about the other
sitting in a quiet booth
in the back corner of a bar
enjoying a drink or two
conversing casually
posing deep questions
pondering the moments in our past
that set us on our separate paths
where we each hope to go
from here
instead of walking away from you
before you’ve even had the chance
to note the color of my eyes
to disappear
back into a mass of humanity
knowing full well
you won’t remember me
ten minutes from now
any more than you would
a certain grain of sand on a beach
a leaf on a tree
one particular ant in a colony
that if I were to be squashed
under someone’s shoe
it would make no difference to you
