Notes About The Poem

Audouin's Hunger

Had a thought a moment ago, just before I broke your aura'd wing,
trapped here, forever, within Audouin's vast crater alone and pining.
Starved for ages, a new gnawing hunger'd vision looked to bring.,
had we met, you and I, before the javelin started skyward climbing?

Though skin is rough and jagged as scoria litter that surrounded,
there beats a heart recognized by all the vanquished ghosts of Mars.
Was this love, don't know..,tho' never felt quite so astounded.
Perhaps startled to realize, it was I..,snared by her eyes in fawning stars.

Pitiful, mortal creatures molded by divine hands such as we,
learn only now, the cosmos proves bearable only through love.
And so I'll starve tonight, and tomorrow, and perhaps forever be.,
though joyous still..,no longer alone, or taunted by constellations above.

At last you take wing again, watch you soar away into the starlit night,
this day found love to save, and let your spirit go in merciful flight.

~~My apologies to Carl Sagan~~

DM, Thank you for the comment. Life can find us indignant at our meager lives. Humbled by the smallest things. But this is where we learn to love. -Richard

Hello Evelyn, Thank you for saying so. The song was sort of meant as a throwback to the Golden Age of the Silver Screen when the credits rolled at the end of the picture show. Happy Easter. -Richard

This is beautiful, Richard; an excellent example of how prose poetry can be expressed. I can see it being snapped up by an astronomy journal or anthology. Regards // paul

Thank you for that Constance. This missive of hope tries to show the importance of self sacrifice. With a little hope, and prayers, maybe others won't have to sacrifice all they have on this Earth. -Richard

Thank you for stopping by, and big thanks for the FAV. I used quotes from CS as inspiration. "For small creatures such as we the vastness is bearable only through love." -Carl Sagan

Thank you for commenting Caren. Poem named in honor of Audouin Dollfus. The Dollfus crater, at 363 km in diameter, is one of the largest craters on the planet Mars. American astronomer Carl Sagan also has a crater named in his honor. -Richard
