The name of the nightclub was called- "Close Encounters" His first hit and the song that I first heard on the radio was titled- "Dancing with myself"
At The Bar In The Nightclub
In the summer of 1978, in a small club in New Jersey a pretty cool thing happened to me.
At the time, I was only nineteen years old, and it was one of my first times ever being at a nightclub. I remember the night was hot and the club was packed with disco dancers and punk rock people. After doing my thing out on the floor, making moves and grooving to the copy band's music, I worked up quite a thirst and decided to go get myself a Budweiser at the bar. The bar was packed with people waiting to get their drinks, so packed that I literally had to squeeze in between a discoed-out dude and an all decked out punk-rocker with short blonde hair. Politely, I asked them both if I could quickly get my drink and be on my way. With his fingers tapping the bar top to the beat of the music, the punk-rocker turned to me and said- "It's a free country, do what you want" looking dazed and baffled I just gave a smile and proceeded with a raised arm to try to flag over a tender. After a few minutes I finally got the tender to come my way, so, I ordered my Budweiser and as a nice jester to the punk-rocker who seemed pretty cool, I offered to buy him a beer. He accepted my offer and we began to have a friendly conversation. We chatted for a few and after a short time I introduced myself to him. By the way- I said, I am Charlie...and you are? He replied with a smile and said- "Hello Charlie- my name is Billy, Billy Idol from the UK". At the time, he had just come over from across the seas, and he was not yet as well-known as he would be in the near future. My time with him was short but as short as it was, I will never forget about it. Two months after meeting him in the nightclub I heard him for the first time ever on the local radio station.
