At my home on a random tuesday
It was a tuesday like any other,
When I came home from school sobbing.
One look at me and my mother asked appalled,
If anyone hurt me, checking for wounds if any.
I hiccuped through my tears and told her all about my blues,
My dear old friend had misunderstood me again!
I loved her, how could she not see?
Some best friend she was when she always hurt me!
My mother sat through my complaints with a patient smile,
Her eyes softened with every word that left my mouth.
I told her how she refused to play with me,
Even when I shared the last of my cookies everyday!
The words ceased to make sense at the half hour mark,
When I started sniffling more than I spoke.
I declared with the conviction of a seven year old,
Never again would I love someone for all my life to be.
I looked up into her eyes that told stories of a similar kind,
As she pulled me into her arms, her touch soothing to my burning skin.
She formed the words like she'd spoken them a thousand times over,
"You're not the love that you get but the love that you give".
~ I chose this moment because I have carried my mother's quote with me all my life. I am not defined by what I get but what I give.
~ Hardest line for me to write was "I looked up into her eyes that told stories of a similar kind,". It was hard to explain that I knew she had also been through similar times in her day while justifying the moment we shared.
~ I removed the conclusion to her quote from the first draft where she ended the conversation with "Affection is not earned. It is given freely."
