Astray Today

This morning polished my desk,
Dusted my computer till it shone,
And mentally wiped the cobwebs
From my cluttered brain,
So I could access and obtain,
The words to which I had no title
A while since I penned a poem, now vital.
Alert, and fingers at the ready to type
But what, had no clue, no inspiration,
I tried one, then twice and even thrice,
Became distressed, perspiration
Dripping from neck, pulled my hair back
Into a pony, made a coffee ate a Kitkat,
Tried to concentrate once again.
My waste paper basked filled
My coffee, no sugar and black, spilt,
I was at my wits end, now what do I do.
So get my umbrella and go out in the rain,
I can no longer endure this
No inspiration, no thoughts or ideas pain!
Have to find my cute little muse
Otherwise I’m sure I will blow a fuse!
I spot her having coffee at Tasha’s
I wasn’t wrong she and her pals
Always hung out there,
I beckon that she please come,
Looks at her watch and like Cinderella runs
To my car, losing her shoe,
Her long fair hair bobbing,
And gets in with all her shopping!
Please help me I’m desperate.
I have a deadline to meet,
This contest is just up your street,
We have to draft a poem
Explaining what to do
When inspiration fails us, me or you,
So I’ll leave you on this cool, breezy porch,
With plenty of cookies and a pot of coffee,
And I’m sure very soon we will
Have, an awesome draft, and post a copy!

Your poem reminds me of the Thomas Edison quote: "Genius is 2 percent inspiration and 98 percent perspiration". Now I know what to do when my muse disappears: find her down at a local coffee shop, chase her till she follows me home and ply her with cookies and coffee! I always enjoy seeing the word 'thrice' in a poem... it has that old-fashioned, underutilized, classic ring to it. Congratulations (belatedly) on your win, dear friend. May your coffee be steamy and your poetry dreamy. Hugs ~ John

My wonderful friend, let me first say that I can't believe the KitKat didn't work! :)) But, I'm glad you found your cute little muse, Jennifer. I hate it when my muse runs out on me.. but I love your poem, sweet lady! A fantastic, lively and creative piece. Congratulations on your fine win! Btw, I was truly captivated by the saga of "My Ancestors Escape", please check out my comments there, and also on "Stars", I left a reply about WW to your reply to my comment ;) Warmest wishes and love, my poetry sister.. ~Susan

Have a break, have a kit-kat says the TV - I wanted to write and ask them would they mind if I had a crunchie instead!Oh I'm so glad you enjoyed my Ancestors poem I wrote, it was really sad. I have yet another story to write about what happenend to my Grandmothers brother. Hard times, and yet - many Greeks still live in Turkey. I am so sorry I haven't been answering my friends wonderful comments and your awesome ones, but I have fallen far behind and am only catching up now. May you have a blessed week my dear friend and yes of course we are poetry sisters, I love this. Hugs and blessings, Jennifer.

Paula, isn't it annoying, you sit down at your computer and delete almost everything you write, because you feel its nonsense. Never mind, we have aour good days as well! Thank-you for a great comment my friend, Hugs and blessings, Jennifer.

Hello Jennifer … one of the hardest thing for most creative writers is to create something on the spot and have it exactly the way you imagined. Most of us have starred in your verse Jennifer - Lindsay

It is very frustrating because you really want to write a poem, but no inspiration whatsoever - and then maybe three days later lots of ideas for poems suddenly pop into our minds, Thank-you for a lovely comment, be safe Lindsay, hugs and blessings, Jennifer.
