Astray in the Dark

Some shall never see the truth, I've been this way since youth, The mask I wear is layers upon layers of paint, So many that facial features appear faint, Unable to see due to this dark veil, Just praying that my feet will not fail, This prison created by my misguided will, A deep maze walked by society's swill, Knees and palms strike dead dry soil, Lead me back to the 99 and from this toil, Glory I've taken is now all yours, Lord, My trough has been hit and I have been floored, Help me stand to live with no more mask, Please Lord to be with you is all I ask.

Your poem has a powerful sense of struggle, redemption, and longing for truth. The imagery of masks, veils, and a deep maze effectively conveys a feeling of being lost--both in oneself and in society’s expectations. The phrase “layers upon layers of paint” is a strong metaphor for the weight of deception or self-denial, and the contrast between “glory I’ve taken” and surrendering it to the Lord adds depth to the internal conflict.
