Ask the Sheep

We know knitters knit wool from skeins, and when wet, us the wearer complains, for our pullovers shrink, and so this made me think, why don't sheep ever shrink when it rains?

Hi Lindsay, hope you are well, read this really fun limerick - sheep should shrink when it rains, that way we wouldn't waste our money on pullovers that shrink in the fist wash - well said Lindsay - hugs, Jennifer.

Thank you once again Jennifer … I think mother nature might have sorted this out a few thousand years ago. Taking out the lanolin might have something to do with the shrinking process - catch you soon Jennifer - Lindsay

Hello Pat … I suppose Mother Nature adjusts, but what do we do; clean up the wool so it can shrink - thank you PAT - Lindsay

Had a great chuckle reading this, Lindsay! Of course, the sheep probably smell like wet wool when it rains. Enjoyed! Best wishes, Carolyn

Hello Carolyn … I reckon the annoying thing is to buy a nice woollen garment thanks to the sheep, and after the first wash, barely fit a five year old - thanks Carolyn - Lindsay

Good work and good question.. Our daughter has natural curly hair and she says she can feel it curling up when it rains. She says it is not a comfortable feeling. Sara

G'day Robert … like you, I really enjoy a limerick written in true limerick form, with a clear message or good wit, and there is quite a number on PS - thanks Mate - Lindsay

Hello Darlene … I think the question is asked often after a new garment has its first wash - thank you Darlene - Lindsay

G'day Kim … new wool is very greasy so after a few washes and knitting needles, we have a pullover - but that still doesn't answer the question; why does wool shrink! - thank you Kim - Lindsay

Have another look at the rams! Aloha! Rico

Only from the other side of the fence Rico - hand reared rams often enjoy a butting frenzy after pulling the wool over your eyes - thanks Mate - Lindsay

Hmmmm - good question, Lindsay. I've often heard of "virgin" wool as well, but personally I've never been interested in the private lives of sheep (there ought to be a poem in that statement somewhere for you old cobber!) - Bob

G'day Bob … where I live is dairy cattle country, so I don't know much about sheep apart from being good to eat. Also, don't believe they are cute and cuddly. Some rams can be anything but a shrinking violet. Shearers hate shearing the wool off them - thanks Bob - Lindsay

I believe the wool on the sheep does not shrink because they produce a natural oil substance called lanolin.
