As We Sail
If time is an eagle
It could be trapped and deplumed
To limit its flight.
If it’s cheetah
It could be fettered to a stock
To determine the scope of its speed
And if time is a sailor
It could be persuaded
To sail slowly,
Or linger here at the shoreline
Where the noonlight nurtures
And the breeze rejuvenates
But we launch towards the night
With the solace of its full moon
And we shall sleep at night
But our works shall stay awake.
To double three scores is but a wish
And whether or not it’s conferred
The days of man are brief.
Must we be easy and loving as we sail
And sip nectar from our hard labours.
For our days are brief
And the time is swift.
Let our nights, O Lord, we pray
Be sweeter than the honey
And our rest as well
Be peaceful like the heaven.
