As Time Goes By

As Time Goes By

sit quietly before my cake
each year a tiny flicker
to remind that life
is easily extinguished.

the song plays softly
in my tired mind
the conflagration before me
wavers and strobes.

today is for here and now
the shining faces bid me
blow and wish. tomorrow
will be time enough remember.

Oh Patricia, your words grieve me. I can't imagine what the wish might have been.
