As Time Goes By

As Time Goes By

I remember immortality
The feelings of elation and joy
We have in the blush of youth
Choosing new paths each day
Brilliant with texture and color
Never giving a thought to
Life being impermanent or
Quickly turning calendar pages
That don’t get our attention
Until they’ve passed on by
No focus on it being early April
Today and mid-November
When we awaken tomorrow
Youthful olfactory senses
Never smelling the primordial
Changes lying in waiting ambush
As our shadows begin walking
Behind us rather than in front
And shortly thereafter we begin
The dance of aging and face
New daily choices whose colors
Are not quite as vibrant and
Come in a texture more corse
Then the smooth lefts and rights
Of a long since passed youth and
Now we get to choose once again
This time aware of our mortality
Whether we want to live in fear
Or elect to enjoy each moment
As the gift that it is...
