As If They Did Not Know

As if they did not know
What tongue to choose
They wrote above the dying form
In three languages
They thought they owned
That ancient African
Still carrying his vow of wood
Brushed the water from his eyes
And did not understand
The silence of the noise in him
His alienation in that crowd
Where sound was foreign to him
A sonic boom of decibels
That formed their callous shell
Then deep from out the other's pain
Another language rose
Eclectic as a jungle song
A seared petal exposed
