As Ancestors Cry

Begging
for what their past endowed
the Sioux
displaced once more
Imbued
by Wakan Tanka
their legacy
unmoored
They fought
the armed invader
winning battles
losing homes
Giving up
the greatest way
of life
— we’ve ever known
