Are You There, God?

I lie so terribly still, face down upon my bed,
My body – shaken, aching, cold;
Pain and fear now turn to tears,
And all I feel becomes my cry

I beg at the feet of a phantom –
An illusion of a past life,
Familiar, yet so far away –
Hoping to be heard

I pour forth my pain: an offering
Slowly, cautiously, my eyes open,
Expecting, but not expecting,
Daring to trust the unknown

Hopeful, I look up.
Waiting, I listen close.
Desperate, I plead.
Angry, I cry aloud.

Then, I realize...
I am alone.
