The surgeon general has a new public health warning. And this time, the hazard isn’t tobacco or alcohol: it’s parenting.

Almost half of all parents say that on most days, “they are so stressed they cannot function,” the Office of the Surgeon General reports in an advisory titled "Parents Under Pressure."

Those findings come in a 35-page report, released in late August 2024, that describes parental stress as “an urgent public health issue.” It draws on data from the American Psychological Association and other sources to make the case that parents face more stress than at any other time in recent history.

How we raise our kids or even our choice to have them impacts society over the long term. The inspirational clip has an interesting take on this topic even if we've never seen anything like it in our society.

Based on a collaborative effort with my daughter, who decided not to have kids. Something she and many others are thinking about these days.

To bear children seems a great feat
For some giving birth's a tough beat
This choice brings to light
A new life that’s bright
And makes parents feel more complete

Parenting—a very tough sport!
The Surgeon General’s report
Notes financial stress
With tantrums and mess
Can adult wellbeing abort

Doing stuff uniquely your own
Means less of rough life though alone
Childless cat ladies
Don’t come from hades
But add TikTok fluff for your phone

A really cute limerick. I love the reference to cat ladies. If my hubbie were to die, I would become one of them, but right now I am only able to have two cats in my house. haha

Andrea, that is the funniest thing anyone has said here in a long time! Let's hope he's around and can keep bothering you for at least a while! I think we all have a bit of cat in us somewhere! Smiles!

Sally, you are the smartest cat lady I know (although I wouldn't have used that term). You did something really special for those kids and your experience shows how absolutely strange the discussion has become. Our society needs more people like you for sure. You are the one deserving honor, citations, and awards for what you have done. You bring nothing but joy to all of us here! Smiles!!

Dear duke, hope you are doing well. Now this is a subject that needs to be spoken about and written about more often. Parental stress! So many don’t understand what parental stress is like! So many parents go through depression, and the stress is never ending! And yes i know so many that do not want to give birth, because of so many reasons. As this world also can be difficult to trust, and bring a child into, when future seems so blurry. I have a son, and i wish i had more kids. But i agree its a tough sport! Well said! And delivered! Thank you for sharing this! Sending you and your family light always

IE, I really appreciate your heart-felt comment. I am so very glad that you expressed these thoughts. Stress and anxiety are major forces in life and we all struggle to deal with them. I do have such admiration for women who deal with the additional stress of bringing a child into the world and all that goes into it. I think it's hard for men to realize just how difficult it all is. I also understand how the stress and sacrifice have become so great that it gives many women pause and grief regarding this topic. Many of us (myself included) want to give women and their chosen physicians control of any medical decisions without interference from government. That could reduce some of the stress perhaps....although there are many other issues to consider.

My friend heard he could support a child in India for just 50 cents a week. So, he sent his kid to India! Jay Leno quipped that The Dating Game and Newlywed Game ensured a new generation of total idiots. Your presentation is extremely well taken, Enjoyed! Robert

Robert...there's been a gradual decrease overall in societal ability to sort out fiction and reality--now sped up with social media. It's funny that we can all point to different things that seem so indicative of our decline in IQ. You picked some very interesting examples. There is a huge incentive from a monetary standpoint to promote idiotic shows like the apprentice and the bachelor(ette). Seems pretty odd to some of us, but it sure does appeal to people who are looking for meaning in life. I'm just amazed this is where people go to find it.

Who would ever guess that the decision to refrain from having children would ever become a political issue? I avoid politics like the plague. Weird world

Tom, you are so on target with this comment. I find myself scratching my head also. A very insightful comment indeed.
