Anima Mundi

This is where black breaks open into bright bleeding feeling
as souls suffer the fire of flesh to enter arena Earth screaming
searching the ether for Adam and Eve's answer to forbidden fever
while angels wear snake skins of war to remember the carnage of this theater
and demons adorn their horns with the rose thorns of newborns,
in the blue garden of aging Eden every breath has a burn, every flame forewarns
denuding knowledge of it's pretenses, unveiling appetites and their prices,
we begin to realize that the Great Mother is a killer as well as a provider for our vices
feeding us the fruits of fortune along with the fate of decay
building our bones, branding the brain, electrifying, crucifying and rectifying our clay,
she communicates, educates and fascinates with looks of lightning and sandy kisses
the Mistress of Lucifer and Christ, she supplies the wood, nails and rain for our wishes,
civilizations rage, rumble and crumble in the judgment of her storms
there's mud and rock for every foot of fury, a cave and castle for all who defy the norms,
in her imperial urn she will cremate your eyes in flames of crude oil
baptise hearts in pools of rose water filtered through eons of soul soil,
her gravity will grind you to the ground where grief grafts prayers from tears,
in the sanskrit of sunrises she will summon songs that give your love ears,
this cradle and cataclysm of her erratic elements is where hearts are born and buried,
Earth, a womb and tomb of ancient bloom, oasis in eternal space where life is carried -

I had no idea that this was the way you would interpret your contest theme, Justin. I must admit....it is fascinating. Your last line really captivated me...as we as so many others here. I must say...Mistress of Lucifer and Christ also shook me up.....she supplies the wood, nails and rain for our wishes. I don't know how you write with such....strength. I'm truly amazed by your work, Justin. You will always be in my favorite poet file. I can never write this way...I wish I could.

Keep me in your heart and see color of flame that has never been felt before Eileen. You write the way God intended, honest and passionately, like a rose being ravaged by the wind, yet enduring with a fierce beauty that humbles the seige Beloved Poetess...J.A.B.

“feeding us the fruits of fortune along with the fate of decay”..very true…she did provide humanity both didn’t she… “in her imperial urn she will cremate your eyes in flames of crude oil….baptize hearts in pools of rose water filtered through eons of soul soil” Those are EPIC lines. I see Earth as the tester of our souls..like you put—an arena revealing the consequences of certain knowledges attained…our free-will leads us to a responsibility we either aknowledge or neglect-- we either choose life or death, just as Adam and Eve were tested, suffering the “fire of flesh” as you beautifully put it. There’s quite a lot to chew here, and it is brilliant, Justin! Love it. Love always, Laura

I love your understanding of my sensibilities Laura, it makes me feel like I'm not alone...yes, the Earth is a showcase of all knowledge and instinct given free expression through our individual hearts, a plane where there are no limits to creativity. Your love opens my dreams Poetess...J.A.B.

Wow...this is powerfully gorgeous, Justin.. The way you describe the Great Mother Earth is really fascinating. A killer and a provider, mistress of both Lucifer and Christ, a womb and a tomb-the judge of the flesh through life and death-amazing how you weave all this in.. I do love how everything connects accordingly.."This is where black breaks open into bright bleeding feeling" That first line evokes a mixture of twofold feelings that I think serves very well for this composition, as all humans are searching for answers of why they are here.

She is the most beautiful balance of life, behavior, and spirit in the entire Universe, and she is my home for now, and perhaps, in the future she will be my Mistress once more Laura...J.A.B.

Fascinating it is to read your own take on your own enigmatic theme. So many unusual (yet poignant) pairings of thoughts ... "demons adorn their horns with the rose thorns of newborns" ... the thorns are there as protection of a fragile beauty. We must protect our youth, as they are a blank canvas, and potential for evil as well as good.

She is the ultimate Temptress, seducer of the soul. Your enthusiastic and unique viewpoints on this poem are so exciting to me Timothy, thank you...J.A.B.

(Part 3) ... so much history that lies beneath our feet. It's a wonder we are here at all, talking back and forth. It is truly as you say ... "Earth, a womb AND a tomb of ancient bloom, oasis in eternal space where life is carried," ... a humble pebble gliding through the galaxy ... a speck teeming with surprising life.

"We begin to realize that the Great Mother is a killer as well as a provider for our vices" ... and like all mothers, they protect their young, with surprising viciousness. Another outstanding line that stood out, "there's mud and rock for every foot of fury, a cave and castle for all who defy the norms," ... what a way to perceive the fossil record!
