And By the Way

It isn't much I give you.
Sit beside me, open as you will
the little block of time from sixty
years ago. I found it earlier today,
cleaning out my bureau drawer.
Remember?

It was a Thursday afternoon.
We spread the homemade bread
with honey from the man at church,
smiled and spoiled our supper
and I didn't care
for as I looked at you I knew
you were my sister ever, ever...
yet as you would never be again.

What was it?
A day we fought no more,
a moment in a frame
we could not touch,
congealed as minutes when
the sun was low.

The little block is safe
inside my drawer,
for no one knows
I cherish my discovery in wonder
that I shared her breath
a little time, unparalleled
and raging in my mind
until I sleep.
                  ~
