See my face, I am real...yes, this is me But don't be fooled, I am not a cowboy You see, the hat upon my head has a purpose It's for myself...It's a remembrance piece Something that is precious to my heart Something that I wear every so often, for warmth No, not the warmth that blocks a chilled day A warmth that leaves chills... A warmth that raises the hairs on my arms This treasured piece I bought lest two years ago Attending a country rock concert, with friends A push-cart with mega hats, from the corner of my eye... Captured me, sucking me in... I fell victim "SOLD"...to the man with the orange flannel shirt Forty five dollars gone, and ten bucks left in my pocket...it was mine A grand weekend I spent, listening to fine music, hanging with friends... Dancing in the crowd, singing...cherishing those special moments Little did I know, this would be the last for my friend Unexpectedly, just like that...his heart stopped I cry, tears fall every time I hear "Green Grass and High Tides" The last song my friend and I had heard together Rest in piece...my friend, my pal So, the secret is now out...I am no cowboy I post this avatar of myself with this hat... So that every time I look at myself...I am reminded of that last day The last day, that I spent with my beloved friend...DanO *Green Grass and High Tides, is a song performed by the Country Rock Band "The Outlaws" Who Is That Star In Your Avatar Poetry Contest Sponsor Mark Massey 1-22-2019

Charlie, the first time you and I corresponded with each other I discerned there was something different about you. Now, I know what it is. You, my friend, have a heart as big as Texas and it graciously matches the hat you wear in honor of your departed friend. No greater tribute is there than to share the legacy of a deep and lasting friendship except to share the Love of Christ. And you don't hesitate to share that as well. Blessings, my friend!!

The first time I saw your avatar - when you first visited one of my posts - that hat was the first thing that I noticed, and I thought it was really all the way cool. Knowing now what it means to you makes it far more than just a cool accessory. It is a personal part of you that must be cherished for all your days. Great hat. Great write. Peace and rest, my friend.

gosh, that is so sad. It's very interesting for us to know the history behind your wearing of the cowboy hat. Well done with this challenge. I almost feel like I need to make up a new avatar to do my contest entry.

Charlie, your avatar was chosen for reasons similar to the ones that led me to choose mine. These photos remind us of a last day with someone close to our hearts. I bet you smile each time you see your image wearing that cute cowboy hat. If not for this contest, I would have thought you were a cowboy! (And that is what I wanted to be when I was growing up.) Best wishes in Mark's contest, Charlie! Also, responded to Soup Mail. Sounds like fun! Hugs, Carolyn

I've gotten to meet several past and present Soupers, including Deb Guzzi from Connecticut, Dane Ann Smith-Johnson from Florida and Robert Dufresne from nearby Ocala. So much fun getting to know each other.

A beautiful poem to honor a fine day with a wonderful friend, indeed. He is probably looking at this photo and smiling, reading your poems leisurely from his seat in heaven.
