An Apology

I should have known and I should have cared
But I was young and I had no fear
Of growing old or the pains they shared
And I didn't see that lonely tear

Ah, but now I know - too late you're gone
Now the pains are mine as the tears fall
I lay awake praying for the dawn
And think of you and I hear you call

Could have given my hands when needed
Should have used my eyes when yours grew dim
There were signs that I could have heeded
God tried to tell me - should have heard Him

But now you are gone and I am old
I am so sorry I let you down
I watched you hair turn silver from gold -
My mother grew old without a sound
