An Amulet of Peace

An amulet of peace hung ‘round my neck, An AR16 rifle in my hands…. Seemed like such a paradox, In the paddies and jungles of Vietnam. An amulet of peace hung ‘round my neck, A man’s life was in my hands…. That life was not only mine, While trying to survive in Vietnam. An amulet of peace hung ‘round my neck, Hoping for guidance by God’s hand…. Ignore our sin, keep us alive and safe, While fighting in Vietnam. An amulet of peace hung ‘round my neck, My duffel bag in my hand…. After 13 months, I was going home, No more to fight in Vietnam. An amulet of peace hung ‘round my neck, An Honorable Discharge in my hand…. Only to be spat upon, called ‘baby killer’, By ‘peaceniks’ against the war in Vietnam. An amulet of peace no longer hung ‘round my neck, The challenge of a new life was at hand…. Found love, happiness and some success, And tried not to think of Vietnam. Again, that same amulet of peace hangs ‘round my neck; And I hope my friends all understand…. I want our courageous young men and women Out of Iraq and Afghanistan.

Beautiful Write...Were you in the service? I know there are many that would certainly appreciate this....To often do people forget the price paid....Thank you so much for honoring that and reminding others to do the same....Sincerely Jen :)

Hello Robert...I saw you mention you didn't know you had won here a couple times..and were new...I was too a while back...it takes a while...I'm still lost..:-) after a poem is judged on the home page where all the peoples faces are on the top..scroll down on the left side to the area...contests winners by member...and click on that..it brings up all the latest contests that have been judged and the winners...you'll see your poem there and what pos. It placed...if it does...if not try again :-)

Thanks much. Since I didn't win, I'm a bit embarrassed. Being a little competitive, I never thought of 7th place as "winning" and still don't. I do however appreciate the reads/exposure and the works of others, some true literature. My stuff is rarely, if ever, literature quality and is fairly eclectic. Again, thanks for the support. Fellow writers have been very cordial.

Thank you for this poem and for you service. I served during Vietnam but not "in country". My daughter and grandson have both been to Iraq so this poem really hit home.

Thanks sooo much. I didn't know I'd won until I started receiving congrats from several gracious folks. Feel like OU players must have felt after kicking 'Bama around in the Sugar Bowl.

Thanks for your kudos. Sometimes experience is the best inspiration, I suppose. Very surprised and happy to be able to share and to read the wonders of others as well.

Thanks very much, but.......How do you know I won? No one has told me yet. If I did win, I'm tickled pink.
