Amid the Jagged Shadows

“Amid the jagged shadows of mossy leafless boughs. . .”
                                                       Samuel Taylor Coleridge

I found him one November deep in thought
amid the jagged shadows of mossy leafless boughs.
By what strange happenstance had I been brought
to him? He was the first man ever to arouse
a thrill I’d never felt so easily!
He looked up at me, and I blinked to see such deep grey.
The grey of that November sky stared back at me.
Those piercing eyes! What were they trying to convey?

He beckoned me to share his bench with him.
I heard inside my head – be wary of a stranger.
My mother’s frequent warnings had been grim.
I backed away, thinking there might be some danger.
A little smile then curved his lower lip.
It hinted of something I’d yet in which to revel.
My chance to ever know? Away I let it slip . . .
for I fled. Was he a darling or a devil?

Hi Andrea! Congratulations on your placement. You so beautifully set the scene for your dramatic ending. Your questions move this piece from beginning to end.

Who cares? The important thing is you survived to tell the tale, isn't it? Aloha! Rico

Listen to your first instinct. If there was a question then your mind was warning you. Great call.

This is a fine poem. Devil or darling who can tell. The last poem you commented on was "One Word" which was not my poem. If you want to comment on that poem go to the poetry of one Daniel Schack. It is his ode. Peace & Love Matthew Anish

Your mother would have plenty to say about that, not the least of which "better safe than sorry". Lovely penning, Andrea
