Altered Driving
The long, sleepless hours,
massive caffeine intake
mixed emotions wreak havoc
on the nerves
shadows jump out from corners
merge up beside on the freeway
cause the car to jerk to the left or right
inside the voice of evil laughs, taunts and teases
a reminder of some discarded family member
left behind long ago
for good reason
he wishes this one would leave
out from behind his conscience
where it hides and schemes
wishes that the drive
could be made easier
nights longer
and dreams a thousand times more restful
knows that if he closes his eyes again
that may happen
for real.
