Notes About The Poem

Even when I was in a crowd, I was always alone. —Ernest Hemingway

                                     Written 14th May, 2026

Listen to poem:

Alone In A Crowd

Do crowds make you feel unseen?
Wish someone knew your name
What would it feel like to be heard?
Maybe you need break the silence.

You’re mouth makes no sound
Footprints leave no trace
Your heart forgets it’s warmth
No one calls your name

You wander through the crowd
Wrapped within a shroud
No one seems to care
You are a nothing but air.

No pain cuts deeper
Than being unseen
Nothing more crushing
As having no voice.

When walking a busy street
Notice the shadow.
When looking at a sunset
Hear the unspoken words.

See the quiet in the crowd,
Hear words left unspoken
Love begins the moment
We choose to see the shadow ….

Very relatable indeed. I actually persuaded a poet to look beyond the soup for bread and butter after reading her poem Be Proud Her name is Ailsa Wright from Scotland. She is in demand and is the founder of Lotus Poetry. Incredible success story. I think she would be impressed by this poem too. regards from David in NZ

Relatable write, Alison. I write a lot about anxiety. Sometimes veiled, sometimes not so much. This one stands out to me because of how you articulate the inner monologue of this feeling.
