All Rise For the Honorable Judge

All Rise for the Honorable Judge

By Elton Camp

The state judge! Sober and impartial is he
From undue influence he is so totally free

It is the public interest that he puts first
Because he can never, ever be coerced

At least, that’s the way we want it to be
But from politics, judge selection isn’t free

A state judge is usually picked by election
Those who give money may escape detection

Big business, into this process, does pour
Far more money than it ever did before

Judges into the courts they hope to pack
Who needed impartiality will come to lack

Judges usually can hear the cases though
Even of those who gave them lots of dough

If state judges are appointed, not elected
Some think better results can be expected

But a quick, easy solution isn’t very clear
For judicial fairness this creates great fear
